RCA's associate compensation is merit-based and increases with the associate's seniority at the firm. Bonuses are an important part of the compensation structure and are determined annually by the firm's Compensation Committee. The Committee relies on evaluations submitted by shareholders to make our salary determinations. Our salary levels are competitive with other firms in the Phoenix and Denver markets.

Becoming Shareholder
The firm considers associates for promotion to shareholder after seven years of practice, depending on the length of time the associate is with the firm and other appropriate factors. However, RCA does not have an "up or out" system. The firm will consider contract-based or flexible schedules, which serve both an individual's and the firm's needs (in addition to those associates not interested in the shareholder track). Among the criteria used to determine advancement are:

  • Professional skills
  • Productivity
  • Client responsibility
  • Firm contributions
  • Contribution to firm profitability
  • Fiscal and administrative responsibility
  • Professional activities
  • Collegiality

Associate Experiences

"In 2007, I was a summer associate at Ryley Carlock & Applewhite, and started as a full-time attorney in 2008 and was my first job as an attorney. While working here I have had the opportunity to grow professionally by appearing in Court, having meaningful client interaction, and learning the practice of law in a culture of professional development. The partners I have had the chance to work with have always genuinely sought to improve me as a lawyer, offering valuable feedback and perspective. Additionally, the firm encourages and supports our individual and practice-group marketing efforts, providing the training and financial backing necessary for us to try and be visible in the community.

"Finally, and most importantly, I have been able to pursue my career goals while having a family. The expectation is excellence; if one is working hard, and producing high-quality work, the firm does not micro-manage when or where you do your work. The bottom line, I get the discretion to manage my time to be the best I can be, as a husband, as a father, and as an attorney. This type of autonomy is unprecedented in our industry, and is one of the many reasons I have found Ryley Carlock & Applewhite the ideal fit for me."
