Biography

Ellen joined Ryley Carlock & Applewhite in 2007. Ellen practices primarily in the areas of labor and employment law.

In her labor relations practice, Ellen advises employers with respect to union related issues including union organizing, picketing, and work stoppages. She has experience with issues of contract administration and interpretation, and labor arbitrations involving contractual disputes and employee discipline. In addition, Ellen assists employers in developing and implementing union avoidance strategies, and defending unfair labor practice charges. She regularly addresses international labor law issues. These issues include, among others, union organizing, employee communications, legislative and regulatory strategy, and positive employee relations strategy.

In her employment practice, Ellen represents employers in litigation before federal and state courts, as well as before federal and state agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and Arizona Civil Rights Division (ACRD). Ellen believes that many employee claims are preventable and therefore provides counseling and training seminars on a wide range of employment matters such as personnel policies, hiring and firing, wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, and compliance with state and federal laws.

Ellen graduated second in her class from Gonzaga University School of Law. While there, she was awarded a Lawless Scholarship by the Washington Judges Foundation; earned the Bluebook Award of Excellence; and received CALI Excellence for the Future Awards for top performance in Civil Procedure, Sales, Corporations, Administrative Law, and Family Law. She also served on the Gonzaga Law Review and was named the Most Outstanding Associate Editor. Ellen received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, magna cum laude, from Arizona State University.
